Appalachian Trail is the most fascinating and hardest hiking trail of the Eastern United States.
It is also considered as the longest trekking trail in the world and with the Continental Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail forms the so-called Triple Crown of Hiking in the US.
The Appalachian Trail length is about 2.200 miles and it stretches between Springer Mountain in Georgia and Mount Katahdin in Maine, passing through 14 U.S. countries. The trail was first conceived by the farmer Benton McKaye in 1920 who was thinking about a special way to connect farms and wilderness study camp for city-dwellers.
The trail is often arduous and if you want to attempt to hike it you need to be well-prepared and consider all the details: from food supplies to high-quality equipment and clothes, to when and from where to begin this unique experience so you can arrange all you need in your trekking backpack. You will pass through different climate changes and diverse natural environments with specific flora and fauna to respect. The most important rules you have to follow if you start this incredible trip are “Leave what you find” that means minimizing your environmental impact, “be considerate of other visitors” and “respect wildlife”.
There are different kinds of explorers who decide to begin this adventure always aware of all the risks of the voyage. Most of them are called “thru-hikers”: they are experts hikers and take five or six months to complete the whole Appalachian Trail. There are Southbound thru-hikers leaving from Georgia and Northbound thru-hikers leaving from Maine. The number of Flip-flops hikers, the ones who start their trip from the middle of the trail, is increasing day by day.
The oldest Appalachian trail traveler walking the route at 82 is Dale Sanders. He is not a beginner, he has already set several records in this field and he has been strong enough to reach the finish line of this path in four and half million steps.
Appalachian Trail may be hard but probably would also be the best experience to feel in contact with the nature in and out of you.
