Have you ever seen a hot spring like this somewhere else?
This is the Grand Prismatic Hot Spring and it is an open-air natural masterpiece. If you do not believe it, you must come to visit the Yellowstone Park, in Wyoming, and stop off right there.
Grand Prismatic Spring is the largest hot spring in the United States and the third largest in the world. It was first mentioned by a group of European explorers and surveyors, and by some of the members of the American Fur Company while they were crossing the Midway Geyser Basin region. In 1839, they made note of a “boiling lake”. After many site visits and studies, the scholars determined that the spring is approximately 370 feet in diameter and is 160 feet deep. It is bigger than a today’s football field!
What is the unique feature of the hot spring? Certainly its colors.
The vivid and striking colors of the hot spring are an extraordinary show to see once in a life. You can easily get there to the Yellowstone Park to admire them, just booking one of the Xplore organized bus tours to the United States through the national parks.
The amazing colors in the spring are the result of microbial mats around the edges of the mineral-rich water, depending on the ratio of chlorophyll to carotenoids and on the temperature gradient in the runoff. Colors range from green to red: while in summer, with warm temperature water tends to be red and orange, in winter it changes from green to grey gradients. It is such a unique things to see among the geysers of the park.
It is impossible not being surprised by the greatness of this natural phenomenon that ranges in the shades of the rainbow’s colors.
